“You Are Here: A Come From Away Story”
by Holly McClure
As 9-11 approaches, images of that day are forever etched into our collective consciousness. But on that same day, on an island about 3,000 kilometers from Manhattan, in the middle of the Atlantic, the citizens of Gander, Newfoundland, gave voice to all that is good and generous within humanity, proving that the worst of times also brings out the best of us. In honor of 9-11, Fathom events is hosting a special showing of an uplifting documentary that was made into a Broadway play…YOU ARE HERE – A COME FROM AWAY STORY. Please make plans to go see this inspiring and special, Fathom event on the night that will honor all on 9-11!
YOU ARE HERE – A COME FROM AWAY STORY is a feature documentary that goes deep into the community of Gander, Newfoundland where 38 airliners carrying over 6,500 passengers were forced to land after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Some people, including crews, knew partial details, but the footage of the planes striking the Twin Towers had yet to be seen. The title comes from a Newfoundland saying. The story has emotional and sometimes humorous layers, dealing with the events that happened during the five days they housed, fed and cared for, the passengers. With no warning and with no time to prepare, a city with a population of only 9,000 played host for five long days to over 6,500 frightened, exhausted and hungry passengers from around the world. The story features the real people who helped that day, those who worked tirelessly alongside countless others to comfort and care for their unexpected guests. The story also includes highlights of some of the passengers, including a couple who, in a period of stress and anxiety met, fell in love and married in Gander, the female pilot of an American Airlines Boeing 777 and a businessman who was so touched by his hosts’ generosity that he went on to create Good Samaritan initiatives in cities across Texas. The film crew experienced exactly what everyone who arrives in Newfoundland gets… a welcome reception and non-stop schedule of festivities involving the whole town. The people of Newfoundland are proud of their heritage and culture and wanted to share this important moment in their history. This is an uplifting, joyous, emotional story that will leave you inspired to help others. There are numerous messages of compassion, friendship and brotherly love, along with tears of joy in YOU ARE HERE – A COME FROM AWAY STORY…most all were changed by their experience. The story harkens back to a simpler, slower, more compassionate time and message …one that I miss in today’s culture. Simply put: the golden rule, ”Do unto others as you would have others do unto you!”
