Why Homeschool?

by Terri Bonin

In Simon Sinek’s inspiring book Start with Why he explains the importance of our values being verbs. Meaning, in order for us to maintain our values throughout life, there MUST be an action associated with it.

He states, ”All organizations start with WHY, but only the great ones keep their WHY clear year after year.” This idea isn’t just relevant to large businesses and corporations, but it holds weight even to the small homegrown business, the college student, or the stay at home mommy.

When I started homeschooling 20 plus years ago, I wanted my kids to have the best education, a healthy environment and the most amazing opportunities as possible, those opportunities have vastly grown as the home school community has enlarged. This WHY remains strong in my soul!

I wanted to be able to teach my kids how to…

…filter the world through the lens of scripture.

You see, when they are little, they are the most impressionable. I knew I wanted to raise strong, independent, well versed, fierce little kingdom warriors. And that would have been so extremely hard if I was only with them a few hours a day.

Over time my values have become verbs. Because I wanted the very best for them, I actively and prayerfully sought out just that. Look, I have 11 kiddos. Most of which are still under my roof and still under my care. If I didn’t often look back at my WHY, I could very easily find myself spread too thin, burnt out, and doing exactly the OPPOSITE I set out to do with them in the first place.

So friends, even if you didn’t start with why as I did, I would encourage you to prayerfully think on your why now. Then, once you’re clear on that vision, turn your value into verbs and run as fast as you can towards Jesus. He’s the author and the finisher of your faith, and I can guarantee you he will be the author and the finisher of your homeschool.
