When Food Isn’t The Problem
by Meggan Larson
This week’s article is going to be pretty personal and I’m only sharing it in hopes that if you are facing a similar struggle that it might encourage you to do some soul searching. Many of you know that I’ve been doing the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan for almost 4 years now and in that time I’ve seen a lot of success (losing 60lbs after chemotherapy and a baby) but I’ve also faced a lot of struggles and the weight has been slowly creeping back on much to my frustration. I know this plan inside and out and I know that it works so what in the world is the problem? I’ve exercised like crazy and ended up gaining weight or staying the same and looking the same.
I’ve done a lot of one on one time with Jesus in the last few weeks and I’ve come to realize that…
It’s not about the food. I could have been eating celery sticks all day and it wouldn’t have mattered. Sometimes the reason you’re gaining weight is emotional. Sometimes there are things buried deep in your heart that you don’t want to deal with and the fruit of that pain shows up in your weight.
When it’s inexplicable and you know that you’re doing everything right, it might be time to search your heart. It might be time to dig up the old hurts that you know you haven’t dealt with and start to let Jesus heal them one by one. I was given up for adoption at birth and though I grew up in a very loving family, I always longed to know my birth parents. I was fortunate enough to get to know my birth mother but my father was a mystery and it has always felt like a part of me was missing.
I spent some time with the Laundry Moms team in Texas a couple of weeks ago and it was such a special time of bonding and late night chats and a lot of God moments. Through them Jesus renewed the hope in me to begin to look for my father again and when I put a picture up on Facebook to try and find him it was shared over 2000 times and in less than 48 hours we were reunited.
Now of course my extra weight didn’t just instantly melt off, but as I heard my father tell me how much he loves me and always has I could literally feel my heart repairing. My desire to binge eat has completely left me much to my astonishment and I feel so at peace. Now my story isn’t going to look like your story because we are all individually made. My hope in sharing this is that perhaps my story will spark something in you to start to deal with past hurts or holes in your heart. They don’t actually go away no matter how deeply we bury them and the emotional stuff affects us more profoundly than we realize. (I’ve been reading through the book “Repentance” to help me through this and it is POWERFUL!)
Learn and follow the Trim Healthy Mama plan for sure. Eating this way is super healthy for you. But if it’s just not working and you KNOW that you have hurts buried deep inside your heart, then take this article as a prompting to begin to search your heart and let Jesus heal it. All you have to do is ask.
