What’s Your Drug of Choice?
by Meggan Larson
Okay I agree, it’s a bit of an extreme title but these are dangerous times. Halloween was on Saturday and you likely have enough candy lying around the house to feed a small army. The chocolate is calling your name, the chips are singing to you, the chewy candies are dancing around in your mind enticing you to have just one bite. So maybe you’re one of those people who doesn’t get tempted by candy. If you are, well congrats. I’m not. Candy calls to me like nothing else. It’s my Achilles heel. Halloween used to be one of my favorite times of year because of all the free candy. I went trick or treating until I was literally 22 years old (hey I’m short and wore a mask, and not because it was required, and so no one knew! LOL!) so for those of you tempted by all of the candy surrounding you; I get it. The struggle is real.
Let me give you some tips on how to say no to the drug that is candy…
First, let’s remind ourselves how it feels when we give in (or perhaps you already have given in – hey I get it! It’s not too late to turn back.) When I give in to my sugar addiction I sadly resemble a wild animal sorting through garbage. I stuff my face at a pace that I’m sure is on par with an Olympian, did you know… stuffing your face was an Olympic event? I can down a donut and cupcake in like 45 seconds flat. And then I’m looking around the kitchen wild-eyed wondering what else I can find and devour before the guilt sets in.
You know the guilt – the “oh no, what have I just done??” guilt that starts to eat away at you (too bad it couldn’t eat away some of the calories we just inhaled eh?). The self-hatred usually starts pretty quickly for me. I start to wonder if I’ll ever get to my goal or if I’ll just climb back up the scale to even worse than I was before. And hey, maybe I even deserve to be this big because I obviously have no self-control and my double chin probably just tripled and maybe I just shouldn’t even go outside for a while in case I see someone I know. It’s depressing, and let’s face it; not even worth it. That candy tastes good but is it really worth the consequences we’ll inevitably face? Especially the sugar crash that makes you feel like you’re 100 years old and need to sleep immediately.
It’s all well and good to know that it’s not worth it but when the candy is in front of your face you need to have an alternative that you can eat that will satisfy your sweet tooth. Here are some of my favorite treats that make me feel like I’m eating candy. Jennifer’s Payday candies, Briana’s Butterfinger Bars, Snowflake Meringue Cookies, and of course any Lily’s milk chocolate bar.
Hopefully, these recipes will help keep you away from the sugar until it’s all been eaten by the other members of your family. Stay strong, you can do this! And if you find yourself in a closet stuffing your face full of chocolate, I understand. Start over in three hours and remember that you’re only human.
