Walking on Words

Walking On Words
by Drenda Keesee

Matthew 14 is the famous story of Jesus walking on the water. The disciples saw Him coming out to them on the lake, and they thought He was a ghost. Peter called out to Jesus, “Lord if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said, “Come.” And Peter walked out on the water.

What’s important to note is that Peter didn’t walk on the water until Jesus spoke. He knew he couldn’t walk on the water, but if Jesus said to walk on the water, he could walk on the words of Jesus. But as soon as Peter lost sight of that Word, the water became the water again. He saw the waves and felt the wind, and he got scared and started to sink. When Peter turned from the Word of God and put his focus on his circumstances, he couldn’t walk on the water.

Have you ever acted on a word from God?

Maybe God told you to…

Walking on Words

…get a new job or move to a new state, and at first, everything was exciting. You were walking on the Word fearlessly because you knew what God had told you. And then, one day you forgot it. In a day’s time, your job and your house were no longer the exciting things that God had called you to—they were just jobs and houses. Suddenly the new coworkers and neighbors you wanted to minister to became annoying neighbors and coworkers whom you couldn’t wait to get away from. Like Peter, you stepped away from the Word of God—and you ended up in the water.

Satan wants to get your attention off the Word of God and back on your circumstances. He wants you to sink. All things are possible to those who believe, but if Satan can get you off of agreement with God’s Word, the power of God is cut off from your life. When you are receiving the harvest, life is going to go better for your family. You won’t have as much strife when the bills are being paid and your needs are being met. Gary and I started to receive God’s blessing in our life when we protected our family from strife. If a tire blew, we didn’t have to go dig through our couch cushions to find enough change to fix it. Life was fun again.

When you talk, you are releasing power into your situation. “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences” (Proverbs 18:21 nlt). Now, that can work in your favor, but if you aren’t using your words wisely, it can cause you a lot of trouble down the road.

When some people pray, their perspective is that it’s like writing a letter of requests to Santa Claus! People don’t realize that God already gave them the keys of the Kingdom, and they are always releasing the Kingdom through their words. “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18).

Wow! Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven. That means that you directly control the blessing in your life. That gives a whole new revelation to the power of your words. So if the blessing is being short-circuited in your life, guess who is binding that blessing? And if unfortunate circumstances are overrunning your life, guess who is losing permission for Satan to attack?

So when you tell your husband, “You always mess this up,” you are losing that over him. In other words, you are cursing him. The law of releasing life or death in your life is in the power of your tongue, and it is operating all the time. Your words are a weapon.

Drenda and her husband Gary founded Faith Life Now, a ministry designed to spread the message of freedom in the areas of finances, faith, marriage, and family. Faith Life Now hosts conferences worldwide, and sponsors both Fixing the Money Thing, which Drenda co-hosts with her husband Gary, and Drenda.

Through their own life experiences, the Keesees have found the principles from God’s Word to be powerful and effective. At one point, Drenda was a young, suicidal feminist with no hope of ever being “good enough” for her own standards of perfection. She never wanted the “inconvenience” of a husband or children, and she was on her own path to success. But the stress of trying to achieve perfection and perform for love left her broken and used. She had success, but it was nothing compared to the pain and loneliness it had also brought.

That’s when God got a hold of her heart. It was there—at her lowest point—that she found the One who accepted and loved her, faults and all. Since that transformation, Drenda has had a passion to reach women who find themselves where she once was.

She married Gary after attending college, and there she found herself in a personal boot camp of sorts. She says, “I cried and told God, ‘I can do anything but be a wife and mother.’” She committed to learning how to do it God’s way. Through the many years of raising their children and struggling to make ends meet, Drenda learned from their mistakes. “I didn’t know how to be a wife and mother, but God saved our marriage, taught us how to parent our children for success, showed us how to have financial success, and then the irony of all ironies, He called us to ministry.” It’s truly because of these life experiences that Drenda can now share so many insightful principles with people who are now going through the same struggles.

Gary and Drenda pastor Faith Life Church at The Now Center in New Albany, Ohio, and also are the CEOs of Forward Financial Group.
