Walking it Out Step by Step
by Diana Scothorn
I’ve often found myself in positions I never wanted to be in. I remember when my sister died unexpectedly at the age of thirty-five, and a few short months later found out my marriage had been compromised for 4/12 years. The pain was unbearable.
It’s hard to take a step when your breath has been knocked out, but I’ve learned our circumstances have no authority over our steps.
We have a choice to…
…get up and keep going or camp in the past of our thoughts and go nowhere.
The steps of a good man are directed and established by the Lord. (Ps 37:23) Our steps have been conveniently organized and arranged in advance.
God will instruct us in the way to go, but it is up to us to do the walking. We don’t have to walk alone, but we have to take one step at a time and do the walking.
Isaiah 42:16 says, “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths, I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and smooth the rough places. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.”
We proceed and advance one step, one day at a time. “Walking it out” means we walk with God as we take little steps of obedience every day. By faith, we take the step God is showing us for that day.
My husband and I get up every day at 4:00 a.m., we pray first thing when my feet hit the floor. We thank God that He ordains our steps and that we will accomplish everything He has called us to do on this day. Not in this week, month, or life, but today. We trust God with today and leave yesterday behind.
Uncertainty wants “today” to walk in “yesterday’s” steps. We are to walk daily, one day, one step at a time! God’s steps lead us in the path before us, not behind.
If we are accomplishing each day the things God has set before us, we will achieve at the end of our life all God has planned for us. We will be fulfilled.
We walk each day and continue in his grace, strength, and ability, knowing when we reach a point in our walk, we do not know which way to go. He will be there to guide the way.
We will come to a point where the pain becomes less, but it takes walking with Jesus to regain our strength. The Lord, by our side, is where our source of joy begins, and the pain diminishes.
Our life assignment is revealed each day. Step-by-step, day by day, as Jesus leads the way. Psalms 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you how to go: I will guide you with my eye.”
As we walk in the steps, God has directed us in today, it will pave the steps we will take tomorrow. God will never let us go astray if we trust Jesus to lead the way.
