An apple a day keeps the doctor away… at least that’s what they say, right? Well today sneak in a little twist to that old traditional meat and cheese sandwich with a yummy little crunch! YES, why not add apple slices right into the middle of that sandwich? That way they are not forgotten on the side as an after thought! We have tried these with different apple varieties and it works great! You can prepare to eat them warm and it also works well to eat as a cold sandwich too!
Enjoy this nice change of pace as everyone packs their lunch to go back to school!
Turkey and Apple Sandwiches
You will need:
8 slices whole wheat or your favorite sandwich bread
2 tablespoon mustard
16 slices of Medium Cheddar Cheese (Swiss cheese is another option)
8 slices Organic Turkey Lunch Meat Sliced (I like to use Applegate Farm Turkey Meat)
1 medium Fuji apple, cored and thinly sliced (gala and even granny smith have worked well for us)
2 tablespoon butter, softened
Putting it together:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Spread the bottom half of bread slices with mustard. Then, layer evenly with sliced cheese, turkey, and apples. Top each sandwich with remaining bread slices.
Lightly butter both outer halves of each sandwich.
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
Cook sandwiches, turning once, until bread is golden, approximately 5 minutes on each side.
Transfer sandwiches to a baking sheet lined with tin foil. Bake in oven until cheese is melted, approximately 8-10 minutes.
Remove from oven. Cut each sandwich diagonally in half; serve warm. This will serve 8.
A panni press works great in making these sandwiches as well, if you have one definitely use it to make these delicious sandwiches.
If you are preparing your children lunch to take with them, you can prepare as mentioned above. Allow sandwiches to cool and then pack in a sandwich bag or sandwich container.
