So you’ve read the book (right??) and now you’re adding up the cost of getting started and you’re worried that you may have to put your house up for sale and move into a cardboard box to be able to get on plan. Am I close? Take that “for sale” sign down and a deep breath. You don’t have to buy everything! In fact, you don’t need to buy any special ingredients at all if you don’t want to. Simply using the THM fuel separating principles with what you’re currently eating can and will get you results.

I’ll be honest, I don’t use…


…coconut flour and I might use 4TB of almond flour in an entire month. I enjoy protein powder, peanut flour, Glucomannan, and the sweeteners. I completely understand that the cost of some of the specialty ingredients can make you do a double take but look at it this way. My container of protein powder has lasted me for eight months and it was $30. That’s only $3.75/month! My $33 bag of Glucomannan has lasted me about 18 months which is only $1.83/month. If your budget is a big factor then I would recommend stocking up on one thing at a time. Make a wish list and start saving your pennies! I also started a local THM Facebook group in my city and we often place orders together to save on shipping costs.

Again, you can do the plan with no special ingredients whatsoever if you need to. Bacon and eggs for breakfast – S. Tuna and a sweet potato for lunch – E. Hamburgers without the bun for dinner – S. That wasn’t so hard was it? Special ingredients are not essential to your success on plan but they do enhance the experience in my opinion. I have really enjoyed coming out of my drive-thru-Sue shell and experimenting with things I would have never thought to use before. Things like sesame oil or balsamic vinegar are things I never came across during my endless pasta and popcorn phase but I love using them now!

Being a trim healthy mama is a life long journey so don’t panic if you can’t afford to buy every single ingredient mentioned in the book right away. You’ll get there eventually! In the meantime, use the knowledge you’ve gained from the book and start working on your health one step and one day at a time.
