Trim & Healthy Mama Tip in a Minute

Trim & Healthy Mama Tip in a Minute

by Meggan Larson

Since having so much success on Trim Healthy Mama I am often asked if people really need to eat every three hours. Or on the other hand, is it really important to wait the full three hours? Yes, and yes! Eating every three to four hours does a few things to your body. If you are one that used to skip meals and starve your body then it lets your body trust you again. What I mean by that is that when your body is in starvation mode it hangs on to everything you put into your body because it doesn’t know when the next time it will receive nourishment might be. Eating every three to four hours tells your body that you can be trusted to feed it in regular intervals and therefore it can release and burn the extra fat stores.

Our bodies were impressively designed if you ask me! Another thing that eating regularly does is rev up your metabolism which in turn helps your body burn fuels and fat faster. (I know that I sound really smart right now but I can’t take credit for this knowledge. Everything I just wrote I learned through the THM book or through previous research).

It is equally important to space out your food intake by at least 2.5 to 3 hours because…

…that lets your body burn through ALL of the fuel that you’ve ingested. If you continuously snack (even on FP snacks!) then your body never gets a chance to fully burn through everything and as a result your weight loss can stall. If you find yourself starving before the 3 hours are up then by all means have a FP snack (THM is not about starving!) and at your next meal increase your protein and veggies and that should help you last the full three hours. This guideline is more lenient if you’re pregnant or nursing because you have different nutritional needs. When I’m nursing (like right now) I need to eat daily crossovers and eat about every 2 to 2.5 hours in order to maintain my milk supply and lose weight. If you’re nursing and have stalled out on weight loss I’d suggest trying to incorporate crossovers to see if it helps. At the very least it’s a tasty experiment!

So that’s spacing in a nutshell. The book of course goes into a much greater and in depth explanation and if you haven’t read through the plan lately you should go back and re-read it. Sometimes reading through a book with fresh eyes is like reading it for the first time again. Since Trim Healthy Mama has so dramatically changed my life, it’s definitely a book I recommend reading again and again.
