There Will Be Giants

There Will Be Giants
by Hannah Keeley

To my child who’s leaving the nest…

I know you’re getting ready to begin your own life. And in your mind, I’m sure you’ve already embarked on this grand adventure. But there is something I desperately need to tell you. I just can’t tell you right now.

Because right now, everything that comes at you looks like it’s been filtered through an iPhone app or edited by Dr. Seuss.

Yes, you’re on your way…

There Will Be Giants

There’s no doubt about that. But the way isn’t always sunny or lined with Truffala trees. Sometimes the light dims and there are giants around the bend.

Yes, my child, there will be giants. Remember those bedtime stories I told you? They’re not like those giants–not like the Big Friendly Giant that Roald Dahl got you to love so much.

These giants are real. Pride can build you up just to watch you crash. Bitterness can creep in and make you just an empty shell of the person you are today. Anger can destroy all that joy you have in your heart. And the worst giant of all–Fear–is ruthless. He’s the most dangerous giant of all because he can cause you to doubt who God created you to be.

I want to tell you all this. Not to make you fearful of the future, but to help you face it with boldness. All the knowledge that will be poured into you in the next few years will be totally futile without the Word of God to be your guide. All the mentors that step into your life will be useless if the Holy Spirit isn’t directing your steps.

People will tell you what you need, what you absolutely, positively cannot do without. But trust me. I have never let you down. I was there when you woke with a nightmare and had to crawl into bed with me. I was there when you lost your tooth and I gingerly wrapped it up to stick under your pillow. I was there when you had your first crush and soaked my shirt with your tears. I was there for all the awards and all the ceremonies–my eyes on nothing but you.

I’ve earned your trust, so believe me. All you need is what you already have. Seek God first, before anything else. And let Him be your guide. He’s the only one who can make those rough places smooth and those crooked places straight.

There will be giants up ahead, but you already have everything you need to send them running. The power in you is greater than any force that comes against you.

David won a nation with a simple stone. And you can conquer this world with what you already hold in your hand. God has created you for a purpose. Seek Him. Honor Him. Praise Him. Need Him. He will fulfill this purpose through you.

No weapon formed against you will prosper and every enemy that comes at you will be scattered, with what you already hold in your hand. It may not be a stone. But it’s something. God will never leave you unarmed. Pick up His Word and win every battle.

This is what I want to tell you right now. I just can’t. Our conversations are of bedding to take to college or plates to register for. We talk about work, school, friends, and the unending demands on people in their late teens and early twenties.

But there will come a time when you will need this. And I’m telling you now.

When those giants taunt you, remember what you hold in your hand. Remember who you are. Remember where you come from. Remember that as big as those giants are, they are actually more afraid of you. Remember the power you hold because of who you are and Whose you are.

Grip that stone. Swing your arm. Throw it hard and throw it true.

God Almighty will blow in your direction and you will always hit the mark!

Beginning that day, she began making changes in her life that took her from overwhelmed to overjoyed. Today, she’s helping moms do the same. Hannah, her husband, Blair, and their seven children live in Richmond, Virginia, and are having the time of their lives!
