The Real Battle of the Bulge

The Real Battle of the Bulge

by Meggan Larson

There’s a very important lesson I learned through a mentor that she refers to as sprouts. Essentially it’s focusing on what’s going well in your life instead of what’s not. “What you focus on you’ll get more of” she taught me. I used this principle throughout my battle with cancer and people were shocked at how happy I was.

When I lost all of my hair I chose to focus on the fact that I had always wondered what I looked like bald, and now I knew! When I gained a ton of weight due to the chemotherapy and the steroids I was on, I was grateful that I wasn’t throwing up every day. Sure, I could have thrown myself a well-deserved pity party, but instead, I looked for the positives in every single situation and you know what…

They were always there to be found!

Weight loss is a battlefield and often the battle is won (or lost) in our own minds. No one is harder on ourselves than us. No one needs to tell us that we need to lose weight, we know. It’s easy to fall into the trap of never being satisfied because we can easily see what needs to change and what isn’t perfect yet. That kind of mindset will only bring us down and cause us to lose momentum, lose inspiration, and lose hope.

If your weight is stalled, at least it’s not going back up, right? If you’ve dropped down a size but wanted it to be more, focus on the fact that you’ve dropped a size and not gone up a size! Trim Healthy Mama peeps often refer to this type of thing as an NSV or non-scale victory. When the scale is stuck it can be so frustrating and it’s up to us to decide if we’re going to focus on that or if we’re going to celebrate the fact that we skipped on the donuts that everyone else was munching on.

Every decision we make, whether big or small, is leading us somewhere. Every time that you decide not to lick the sugary icing that you made for your child’s birthday cake, it’s a victory and deserves to be celebrated! These small things may seem insignificant on their own, but strung together they will bring you to your goal.

What you focus on you’ll get more of, so today, choose to focus on what you’re doing right and ONLY focus on that! Don’t cancel it out by saying “I lost 5lbs BUT I wish I had lost 10lbs”. That cancels your victory! “I lost 5lbs” – yay!

“Life and death is in the power of the tongue.” – Proverbs 18:21 speak life over your accomplishments regardless of how small they may feel. Eventually, you will look back and be shocked at how far you’ve come.
