Holly on Hollywood
“The Peanut Butter Falcon”
by Holly McClure
This is absolutely a heart-warming, PG-13, “Huckleberry Finn” inspired adventure for mature teens to adults. (Parents heed the rating!) The unusual story is funny with lots of human emotions, mature themes, frequent language, a character wearing only his underwear in several scenes, a man is beaten up, a violent wrestling match (with some blood), characters drink a bottle of whiskey and suffer hangovers, flashback to a drunk driving accident, guns and shooting, a character is bullied and beautiful scenery. LaBeouf gives a brilliant performance as a troubled man who comes off as harsh and irritable at first, then brother-like and protective of Zak, wanting people to see him for who he is – not what he appears to be. Gottsagen has Down Syndrome in real life and gives a truly remarkable, break-out performance! Credit goes to the writer beause you never feel sorry for him, but rather appreciate his determination. He’s very funny which eases a lot of the awkward moments. Themes of friendship, brotherhood and redemption, are woven into a story that resonates with biblical values about not judging someone by how they look. And just because someone is different, handicapped, etc. it doesn’t make them any less capable to achieve their wildest dreams. I thoroughly enjoyed The Peanut Butter Falcon! It’s a feel-good story with a satisfying ending that leaves you smiling.
