The Past is Calling

The Past is Calling

by Diana Scothorn

Over the years, I had repeated dragging my past into my present. After failing in relationship after relationship, I got in the habit of bringing everything from one relationship into the next one. This is the perfect recipe for failure!

When we experience the sting of pain, it isn’t easy to forget. I’ve learned…

…you don’t forget the memory of your past, but you decide to leave the memory of your past behind

Choosing to hang on to the pain of our past has the power to block the vision for our future! Philippians 3:13 states,“ I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

It’s human nature to hang on to our painful memories to “self-protect” our hearts. When we feel familiar pain, we immediately recognize we remember this pain and go back in time and respond very similar to how we did before when we first experienced it. Unfortunately, at that point, we start going backward. Jesus wants us to move forward! He wants us to give Him the pain and LEAVE IT WITH HIM!

Isaiah 43:18 states, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

God never intended us to drag our past into our present. He will make a new way and do a new thing in our life if we allow Him to do so. Jesus will take the things that the devil meant to destroy us to prepare us for a beautiful future with a heart filled with one precious memory, He Died so we could live!

It’s a choice to allow or halt the past from dictating our future!… when the past is calling don’t answer!

Jesus took the pain of yesterday so we could glorify Him today! I’ve had to learn to make a conscious decision daily that I will not allow what has happened to me to affect what God has prepared for me! I am so grateful Jesus took my past to redefine my future!

Anything in my past that keeps me from moving forward, I must choose to leave behind! Whether our past is terrible relationships, failed diets, poor health, poor spending habits, or poor judgment, it’s up to you and me to settle it in our minds and decide to be done with it! If we forever hang on to our past, our past will forever hang on to our future!
