Numbers Don’t Lie
by Meggan Larson
I’ll be honest, I’m not usually one to take my measurements – especially when I’m just starting out on a weight loss journey. Frankly, I don’t want to know the circumference of my stomach or how large I’ve let my thighs get. I took a before picture and that’s sufficient right?
Not always…
The scale is an excellent tool to help measure your progress but it isn’t the only tool. There are times (I like to call these times the danger zone) when the scale isn’t budging, and the pictures don’t look any different, and for a moment the frustration of the plan seemingly not working takes over and the temptation to get into the car and drive to get a big mac with a large fry and a milkshake is so overwhelming that you find yourself heading to the door in your bathrobe and slippers with the car keys in your hand. This is where your measurements come in handy. Often times when the scale isn’t budging your measurements are and the only way to know that is if you took them to begin with.
I started out the new year with a big loss of 8 & ½ lbs the first week but the next couple of weeks I only lost a half-pound. That can often be a recipe for disappointment, however, I had taken my measurements and though the scale showed a very slight loss, my measurements told me that I had lost almost 10 inches in those two weeks! Your measurements can be just the thing to propel you through a “stall” because they mark the progress you can’t see. I get it, we need to know that it’s working even if the food IS delicious. The temptation to go back to what we’re used to is so strong when things don’t seem to be working. Use this tool to make sure you keep yourself on track and keep your shrinking bum away from McDonald’s!
