The Hand of God
by Hannah Keeley
I remember seeing pictures in my Art textbooks of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. I remember thinking, ‘If only I could see that one day and behold its magnificence.‘ I imagined Michaelangelo painstakingly painting the ceiling, with such care and brilliance. It must be truly breathtaking to see it in its full glory, instead of just an image on a page. One part of the Sistine Chapel that especially appealed to me was the Creation of Adam, where God is reaching out and touching the hand of Adam. To touch God’s hands….unimaginable, yet beautifully captured in art.
Last night I saw something even more magnificent…
I saw the hand of God, not in a textbook and not even in a painting on a ceiling. I saw the hand of God reaching out—right there in my bedroom! My kids often fall asleep in my bed and I come in and move them to their own beds later on. Last night I walked into my bedroom where Korben had been reading books to Klara. They were both fast asleep with hands reaching out to one another and taking hold. My eyes welled up with tears. It was so beautiful, so honest and pure. It was as if I were beholding the hands of God. I thought of how painful and uncomfortable it was for Michaelangelo to create such beauty, but how even to this day it endures in its brilliance.
In every effort we put into our homes and our families, we are doing the same. It’s uncomfortable sometimes, it even gets pretty painful and tiring. But look at what we are doing! We are creating a masterpiece. There it is, right under our noses! The hand of God…and we don’t even need to travel to Rome to experience it.
Enjoy the beauty of your family this holiday season!
Hannah Keeley was once in overwhelmed mom living in a cluttered house, deep in debt, out of shape, and barely hanging on. But one day, after finding herself sobbing uncontrollably into a pile of clean laundry, she realized God has bigger and better plans for her (just like He does for each one of His children). Beginning that day, she began making changes in her life that took her from overwhelmed to overjoyed. Today, she’s helping moms do the same. Hannah, her husband, Blair, and their seven children live in Richmond, Virginia, and are having the time of their lives!
