The Grass on the Other Side
By Meggan Larson
How many times have you thought to yourself that you’ll be happy when you’re thin? That you just need to lose another 10lbs or 30lbs or 100lbs to feel good about the skin you’re in? Have you avoided looking at your reflection when you’re out shopping because of how unflattering it is? Has another summer come and gone with you not at goal weight? I have felt all of those things at one time or another mama, I so get it.
The thing is…
…the grass is not always greener on the other side. Besides, you still have to water it right? You have to stop letting your weight define your happiness. Will you be happier at goal weight? Maybe. Will your life be perfect from that moment on? Of course not! I saw a beautiful thin woman the other day who looked absolutely miserable and it reminded me that someone has what I want while I’m wanting what someone else has. I have three beautiful, precious, and amazing children. Some women long for children and can’t have them. Some of them are thin and have absolutely perfect bodies but their hearts are broken. I don’t want to waste the season I’m in refusing to go out because I’m not where I want to be physically. Who freaking cares? My kids want to swim with me, run with me, play with me. If I refuse because I don’t want to be seen in a bathing suit then I’ll look back on their childhood with regret. Yes, my legs jiggle when I wear a bathing suit but my kids don’t even notice! Neither does my husband, bless his heart. The only person bothered by the extra weight on my body is ME!
I’m tired of looking at other women and longing for my pre-baby body back. That’s not even realistic! I don’t know someone else’s story. The person whose body I’m wanting could have a disease where they literally can’t gain weight. That’s scary! Would I trade my life for someone else’s just because they’re thin? Gosh no! And neither should you. Eat well, exercise, do your best but make sure your headspace is healthy above all. That matters so much more than a size 2 outfit any day.
