The Family God Uses First

The Family God Uses First

by Erin Lichnovsky

I’m always so thankful for God’s time.  Each week I pray and ask the Lord for inspiration on what topic to write about for the amazing readers on The Laundry Moms.  Today, I was inspired by the most anointed sermon my pastor, Dr. Ted Seago,  gave to Grace Community Church  titled, “The Family God Uses”.  Based off the book by Tom Blackaby,  The Family God Uses , my pastor expounded beautifully on ministry within the home and ways that we are used of God to disciple our children.

Here are some highlights: A special thanks to Dr. Ted Seago for permission to share these insights.

Our families are cultural missionaries every day, everywhere.

The Ministry occurs here…

…at the breakfast table

…when siblings help brothers or sisters with their schoolwork

…when doing chores

…when helping with cleaning

…when deferring to others

We have a mission field inside our homes…our children.

What is the role of children?

Ephesians 6: 1-3

1. Children are to OBEY their parents.

Children obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Colossians 3:20

It is the first command that comes with a promise: “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

2. Children are to HONOR their parents.

Those who honor their parents are blessed.

But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done all that he commanded you, therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Jonadab the son of Rehab shall never lack a man to stand before me.” Jeremiah 35: 18-19

Those who do not obey their parents are put into this category:

slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, for people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy..  Romans 1: 30; 2 Timothy 3:2

Proverbs reminds us what happens to those who do not honor their parents:

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction and forsake not your mother’s teaching… A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.      Proverbs 1: 8; 13: 1; 30: 17

How are we to honor our parents?

Honor them with both actions and attitudes.

Honor their unspoken and spoken wishes.

We have to look at family life as a “work in progress.” Even in our weak moments as a family, God can still use us in his kingdom. We don’t have to wait until we are functioning as a perfect family, doing everything right and honoring God.

The most important lesson I learned from this sermon is that I don’t have to travel overseas to “minister” the gospel and share the Love of God with others.  God calls my work inside my home “ministry’, and He is using my family dynamics as a ministry to the members inside my home as well as to others on the outside.  Home, chores, daily to-dos, cooking, errands, all these things are ministry when done unto the Lord.  What are some ways YOUR family has been used by God in ministry both inside AND outside the home?  The Laundry Moms would love to hear from you.
