The Exit Strategy Plan

The Exit Strategy Plan

by Meggan Larson

I’ve been fighting some illnesses for the last couple of weeks and there were several times that I was tempted to go off plan and curl up in bed with ritz crackers because frankly, who wants to cook when they’re feverish or nauseous? Not me. I barely want to cook at the best of times if I’m going to be completely honest. But alas, I made a commitment to myself to be on plan 100% for the entire year and that is what I’m going to do. There are certainly some things I’ve found that come in handy for the times you KNOW are going to come – sickness, unplanned travel, unexpectedly long wait times, late for dinner, etc, etc. The only thing that should surprise you about those times is when they happen, not if.

Some of the tips I’ve picked up along the way are to…

make batches of things ahead of time and have an emergency stash in the freezer. I know that when I’m sick with the flu, all I want to eat is chicken soup but the last thing I want to do is make it. That’s why I make a big pot of it when I’m perfectly healthy and freeze some of it for the next time I’m under the weather. That way I can just pull it out of the freezer and have nice piping hot bone broth chicken soup without the effort of making it. I always have a quest bar or lily’s chocolate bar in my purse for the unexpected times I’m delayed and unable to get anything on plan while I’m out. I make plenty of treats to pop in the freezer for the times I’m getting hangry and need to appease my stomach before I say things I shouldn’t and need to eat crow (I don’t think that’s on plan!). I always have an exit strategy because otherwise, it’s just too easy to have a slice of pizza or a quick burger because there was nothing else and it was so unexpected. Was it though?

Let’s face it, we’re all going to get sick, we’re all going to be running late, we’re all going to get stuck somewhere we didn’t intend to get stuck. That’s life! But we all know that those are the times we tend to make excuses for why we fell off the wagon or had an off-plan meal. You CAN actually plan ahead for these things even though you may not know exactly when they’ll happen. Be prepared and hire yourself to do your own cooking for when you’re unable or unwilling to do it. 😉 You’ll thank yourself for it when you’re lying on the couch shivering and sneezing and can nurse yourself back to health with food you lovingly made for yourself. Now that’s a beautiful picture!
