The Best Time to Start
by Meggan Larson
We’ve all been there. You’re icing a cake for your daughter’s birthday and you lick the spoon; no big deal, right? Your husband is eating some of your favorite French fries and you pop a couple/few in your mouth – but it’s the last time you tell yourself; I’ll be good tomorrow! But tomorrow never seems to come. Tomorrow turns into next week, which turns into next month, and before you know it you’ve spent another 6 months not being on plan, and now you’re even further away from your goal than you were back then! If it sounds like I’m in your head right now it’s because I’ve been there. You won’t receive any judgment from me.
That being said though, there comes a point when…
…we have to say no. No to the off-plan takeout because you’re starving and it’s supper time. No to the Starbucks cinnamon dolce latte, no to the bag of chips, no to the small off-plan dessert. You cannot go North and South at the same time. If you try to go in two directions at once, you’ll just stay stuck. There comes a time when we need to make a decision either to go North or to go South. We will either stick with what we’ve been doing for years and years, or we’ll make a change.
The beauty is that we get to decide which direction to go in. If what you’ve been doing all of these years has gotten you to where you’re at and you’re unsatisfied with the results, then you need to decide to make a change. It takes about 21 days to make (and break!) a habit. Are you worth 21 days? Is your goal? Is your vision? Is your dream? This doesn’t just apply to weight loss; it applies to life in general. Anyone can do something for 21 days. It’s not even a month!
Every day that you succeed makes the next day a little bit easier. The first few days will likely be tough. You’ll go through withdrawal, cravings, headaches, maybe even the shakes! But when you make it through that first week you’ll want to throw your fist in the air for a well-deserved fist pump. And I’ll be right there with you throwing my own fist pump and cheering you on!
You CAN do this and if you’re still breathing (which I imagine you are since you’re reading this) then it’s NOT too late. Start today, right now even! Because 6 months from now you’ll be able to say “I’m so glad I started when I did” instead of “I wish I had started 6 months ago”. (Cliché alert!) Today is the first day of the rest of your life – make it count! And when you’re tempted to turn in the wrong direction and go back to your old habits; just say NO!
