Holly on Hollywood
“The Art of Racing in the Rain”
by Holly McClure
The PG drama deals with mature themes from the dog’s perspective, including talking about his imminent death from old age and learning life’s lessons from humans in hopes that he’ll be reincarnated as a racecar driver, just like his master! (Spoiler Alert) Mature themes dealing with a cancer diagnosis, death, a custody battle with grandparents, a scene where the dog makes a mess on the carpet and an implied reincarnation. Costner’s voice is a perfect old-soul narrative that guides the story with humor and interesting life perspectives that mostly adults will relate with. Ventimiglia and Seyfried have a natural rapport portraying a couple in love despite life’s trials. Younger children may be upset by sadder scenes but the heartfelt story about life, along with a happy ending, will connect with ages 10 and up.
