I remember once when I took Karis to his fencing lessons. As usual, I sat on the side of the gym, an open notebook in my lap, pretending to write something while I was actually observing Karis in every little thing he did. I love watching my kids.
There were two little boys in his class; and this particular Saturday, one of them was having a difficult time holding his foil. Because of his size, he didn’t have much arm strength and couldn’t control it very well. The teacher came over and instructed him to get control of his foil. She firmly grasped his hand around the base and said…
“Handle it! Don’t let IT handle you!”
So often, we feel that we can’t handle the things life throws at us. We spend our days in reactionary mode. I should know. I was there. My outlook and my attitude was totally at the mercy of whatever would happen to me that day. If something good happened, I was happy. I something bad happened, I was depressed. Life was handling me. I was NOT handling life.
If you don’t watch it, this could happen to you. It’s natural to just slip into reactionary mode. It’s the easy thing to do. It takes a conscious effort to sit in the control seat and take over the course of your life. But, believe me, it’s the only place you want to be. Don’t get tossed around by life. If you do, pretty soon, you’ll be drowning. You deserve more than just making it through the day or surviving the week. You should be thriving.
You know that old saying, “if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time?” It’s so true. If we don’t have a direction and set a course in life, it’s going to take us into rough waters. You’ve got to design your life and create your destiny. This means knowing your destination, setting a course, and constantly adjusting your progress. There is no “auto pilot” in life. You’ve got to handle it or, believe me, it will handle you!
The coolest thing about the whole process is that as we continue to struggle with that load, we develop strength and endurance that we didn’t even know was hidden within us. If we never had any trials, we would never perfect those skills that God breathed into us. Don’t despise those days when you are having a hard time handling the tasks that lie before you. They are building you to a new level of greatness.
Philippians 3:14 reads, “press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Being a mother and a homemaker is one of the greatest “upward” calls of God. What an honor to raise a family and manage a home! What an awesome responsibility! But you’re only going to get out of it what you put into it. It can throw you for a loop if you are not sitting in the control seat. Keep your eye on the prize and daily, hourly, press on toward the goal that you have set for yourself. Don’t let it handle you! Take aim and set your course. It’s the adventure of a lifetime!
