Tell Your Children’s Children
by Diana Scothorn
We give birth to the thoughts that drop in our hearts when we speak them out of our mouths. If we are not careful, instead of giving birth to faithfulness, we can begin to breed forgetfulness. It is so easy to “arrive” and forget where we were before we got there!
I was reminded one day, as I was thanking God for our beautiful home and His Goodness, exactly how far God had brought me. I instantly remembered my little $250 a mo, two-bedroom 750sq ft frame house, with one tiny bathroom, no shower, linoleum floors, a wrap-around porch, and believe it or not…
…NO CLOSET!
I guess if Jesus could be born in a manager with no place to lay His head, I could live with no place to hang my clothes! Lol! I seriously had to use a garment rack to hang my few clothes! I had minimal furniture that was handed down, yet proud of everything I was given!
Deuteronomy 4:9 says, “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, so you do not forget the things that your eyes have seen, and do not let them depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your CHILDREN and your CHILDREN’S CHILDREN!
Simply meaning let our children know and see all God’s Faithfulness and Goodness He has poured out on our life! It’s easy to get caught up in rushing our children from place to place striving for them to have a better life, and in the meantime forget to tell them how far God has brought us.
When we remember where we once were and Praise God for where we are, that is feeding on His faithfulness! When we tell our children and our grandchildren about God’s goodness in our life, we are birthing gratitude for God’s faithfulness in their hearts! We are not dwelling on what we have yet accomplished, but instead of all God has accomplished in our life!
A few years back, I decided to show our children and grandbabies what God’s faithfulness looks like. One Sunday after church, the entire family caravanned three cars to my hometown in Weatherford, Texas, as we drove down Bridge Street, where I once lived.
As we slowly drove down the little old familiar street, tears streamed down my cheeks, and my heart was overwhelmed with God’s faithfulness!!! I never dreamed at that period in my life, in my wildest imagination, the big dreams God had for my future!
I was trying to survive, barely able to make ends meet, yet God had huge plans for my destiny! I had no idea!!!! If we do not give up, God will not disappoint!
As we pulled in front of the old frame house, my heart was overwhelmed with gratitude! Images of struggle and barely enough were vivid as we all stood and looked at the weathered old home my firstborn child was born. I’m not sure what the people inside must have thought as three vehicles (one with seven children at the time) were doing standing in front of their home, all gazing at their little frame home.
I knocked on the door, and an older woman answered, and I told her that I use to rent this home, and it was special to me and if it were possible to show our children around the house.
To my surprise, the man I rented it from all those years ago happened to be her husband, and they were now living in the home he once upon a time rented to me. He came to the door, now in his late nineties. Oh my goodness! I shared with him how special this sweet home was to me and how it was a memorial stone for God’s Faithfulness!
They proudly took us on a tour inside their sweet home, and my children could see God’s Great Love as well as His Faithfulness over our life! They were amazed and surprised that this had once been where I lived. It was exactly how I remembered.
We took pictures with this precious little man and his wife standing in front of my first home and went about our day, all our hearts Full of God’s Great Love!
We were all blessed, and our children had a picture of reality that I came from a very humble beginning! I am reminded that when we begin to think about all we have left to achieve, we need to stop and think about where we came from and where we once were, as we tell our children’s children of God’s Faithfulness!!!!!
