Taking Your Thoughts Captive

Taking Your Thoughts Captive

by Hannah Keeley

Klara is so into drama! If there is a stage, then she wants to be on it!

A few weeks ago, she was preparing for her very first real performance (not that there is anything wrong with all the plays she puts on in the living room, but it was time to move it to a new level). She was in “Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang!” and practiced her song religiously every single day.

We were driving down the road and she was singing the song in her head; and, without even thinking about it, I popped in a CD. A catchy song came on and Klara was getting frustrated because she was still trying to sing the song in her head. Finally, out of exasperation, she put her hands to her ears and yelled out, “Gosh! This song is so….addictinating!”

I started laughing because…

I knew exactly what she was talking about. Sometimes songs are so addicting (or “addictinating”) that you just can’t help singing them. But there is so much more to it. A lot of the messages that this world gives us is addicting to. Perhaps you’ve heard some of them–parenting teenagers is horrible! Managing a home is for idiots! This situation is never going to turn around! So many thoughts and ideas that run through our heads are nothing but lies, lies, lies. But sometimes, we just feel like we can’t stop them from playing over and over.

This is when we need to take our thoughts captive–instead of being taken captive by our thoughts!

“Inasmuch as we refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).”
2 Corinthians 10:5

When these “addictinating” thoughts start running through your head, you need to take action. Battle these lies with the truth that can only be found in the Word of God.

Parenting teenagers is horrible?–“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord.”
Managing a home is for idiots?–“She opens her mouth in skillful and Godly wisdom. She looks well to the ways of her household.”
This situation is never going to turn around>–“Behold, I am doing a new thing. I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

Remember, the battles of the mind are the biggest battles we will EVER fight in life. You can let those dis-empowering thoughts take you captive, or you can take them captive with God’s truth!

Hannah Keeley was once in overwhelmed mom living in a cluttered house, deep in debt, out of shape, and barely hanging on. But one day, after finding herself sobbing uncontrollably into a pile of clean laundry, she realized God has bigger and better plans for her (just like He does for each one of His children). Beginning that day, she began making changes in her life that took her from overwhelmed to overjoyed. Today, she’s helping moms do the same. Hannah, her husband, Blair, and their seven children live in Richmond, Virginia, and are having the time of their lives!
