Take a Momma Time-Out!
By Terri Bonin
Everyone needs a do-over sometimes. At times you just need to yell “TIME OUT” and take a minute to calm down, scream into your pillow, cry, etc. We all have those days mama and there is no shame in that. I don’t know of any mom who hasn’t had a day they wish they could do over. The dog pooped on the floor, the five-year-old threw up all over the floor, your daughter told you she hated you…sometimes we just need a stinkin’ minute and it’s important to take that.
One of the ways I like to enhance those “minutes” is to…
Pair them with essential oils. Did you know that the limbic system of the brain is where all of our trauma and memories are stored? It’s also the only part that can only be accessed by smell. That’s why I love to take a minute, calm down, and put a drop of an emotionally supportive essential oil and inhale it deeply. It really helps to refocus my thoughts when I REALLY need them to refocus if you know what I mean.
One of my favorite oils for this is called Release. It’s a Young Living blend and when I’m having a particularly rough day, it’s so helpful to just take a deep breath, say a prayer, and release the frustration, stress, and anger. Holding onto it won’t do you any good anyway, but sometimes you just need a little extra help which is what I consider the oils useful for.
This time of year can be rough for a lot of people because it’s colder. Everyone is stuck inside more often, the sun is farther away, and feeling hopeless can start to set in. Taking a big whiff of lemon essential oil can raise your spirits almost instantly and there are other blends like Joy and Hope that can have the same effect. I’m not saying that essential oils are going to make your children behave and give you perfect days from here on out. That’s a fantasy! But what they can do is help you take a minute and feel completely different afterward. So get yourself some release, or joy, or hope oil and take a minute. You’ll come back feeling so refreshed that you’ll wonder how you ever went without them.
