I love it when you see something over and over, and then–all of a sudden–when you see it again, God just kicks you in the bee-hind and you see it with a pair of fresh eyes.
There’s this DIRECTV ad that comes on frequently while Blair watches football games. You see a scene where villains are stealing stuff and wreaking havoc everywhere. Then you hear a phone ringing, but the superhero who is supposed to “save the day” just got DIRECTV, so he’s way too busy watching TV to go rescue anyone. The voice over tells you that there are hundreds of choices, so “you’re going to be busy…super busy!”
Let’s just get one thing straight. God does NOT want you to be busy. He wants you to be productive! And those two things are as different as night and day. The enemy loves for you to be busy, because being busy makes you take your focus off of what God wants you to do.
Think about this verse for a minute: “Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.” John 15:4
God has placed you here for a specific purpose, a glorious purpose. You can easily miss out on it if you’re too busy to see what’s really important. There are plenty of distractions today–clubs to get involved in, activities for the kids, hobbies, stuff–you name it, it’s available. It’s kind of like that superhero sitting on the sofa surfing through all his cable channels…so many choices! Well, let me tell you something. You are already a superhero. God has breathed super abilities and super powers in your life. But He will not bless efforts that are out of His will for your life. So many times we heap our plates full and then complain to God because He is not giving us the energy, strength, and time to do it all. But, here’s the deal: He never told you to take on all that.
There is a war going on out there and we need to get involved. The enemy wants to steal your time, kill your dreams, and destroy your relationships. And one of the best tactics he uses is getting us so busy that we miss our true purpose. God never told you to get busy. God tells you to be fruitful! In John 15:4, Jesus says that as long as we dwell in Him, we will be productive. We will produce fruit in our life that is more abundant and excellent than anything we could ever do on our own. Apart from Him all we can do is be busy, and nothing good ever came out of being busy.
Before you take on something else, think about if you are being fruitful in life or if you’re just being busy. It’s time to let those super powers shine!
