When I go walking with the kiddos, I always have a little hand in mine. Usually it’s Klara’s or Kenna’s. The other day, we were nosing around in the woods and I had Kenna’s tiny hand in mine. The pathway (if you could call it that) was totally overgrown and her steps were pretty unsteady. When we got to rough patches, my grip on her would strengthen and I would just carry her over them. She didn’t have a care at all about where she was going. We were together and that’s all that mattered. Her steps were my concern, not hers. All she had to do was just take the next step. I made sure her landing was safe and sound.
A lot of times in life we’re not sure of that next step…
We get confused and worried. We sit around making pro and con lists, talking to everyone who will listen about our problems and concerns (even if they’re only pretending to listen). We toss and turn at night, and spend hours during the day imagining scenarios.
This is not how we were meant to live–no ma’am!
Psalm 37:23-24 tells us “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” What a relief! It was never God’s plan to have us worrying and fretting about our next step. If Kenna had been freaking out and worried if she was going to get snagged in a weed or trip on a rock, it would have broken my heart. She wouldn’t be trusting in me to guide her steps. And on top of that, it would have totally ruined our walk, our special time together.
The coolest thing about this passage in the Bible is that the Lord delights in every single detail of your life–every single detail! Isn’t that amazing? He will direct your steps, but there’s a catch here. It says that He directs the steps of the godly. A lot of people want the direction, but without the godliness. No can do, Mama. It just doesn’t work that way. Our steps need to be blameless. Take the extra effort to do the right thing, even when no one around you seems to care. God cares. He delights in every little thing about you. Put effort into managing your home and being on top of the details. Put effort into caring for others and sharing love with people God places in your path. Put effort into encouraging your family. Let joy bubble up and overflow. You get yourself in the right direction, and God will make sure that next step is on solid ground.
Let God guide you. You may be going through a rough patch right now and are unsure of that next step. Let it go. God is directing your steps. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes the path is dark and scary. He has you, and He truly does care about every little detail. Let go of the worry. Let go of the deliberation and the stress. Trust in Him. He will never let you fall.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
