Staying on Plan During a Tragedy

Staying on Plan During a Tragedy

by Meggan Larson

There are times in our lives when tragedy strikes and it’s hard to put one foot in front of the other, never mind stay on track with our eating habits. When our lives are irreparably changed so suddenly, it can be difficult to remember why we even wanted to lose weight in the first place. This is what happened to me when I was suddenly diagnosed with…

…a very rare form of cancer at just 29 years old.

I had two babies (19 months and 3 months) and was still nursing my youngest full time. I had less than 48 hours to wean him before starting intense chemotherapy. I wish that I could say that I was super health conscious and only ate salads and chickpeas but alas, I cannot say that. Part of the reason was that my community surrounded me with love, baked goods, and many, many casseroles. Another family ordered pizza for us every single week for 2 months! It was incredible, it was amazing, and it was definitely NOT on plan. I hadn’t heard about Trim Healthy Mama yet but I know in my heart that I didn’t try to lose weight though I definitely had weight to lose. I was never sick during chemo either and that combined with the steroids I was on caused me to gain a significant amount of weight very quickly. I was so focused on giving all of my fear and worry to God (which I don’t regret for a second) that I didn’t spend any time focusing on my health beyond the immediate threat to it. I’m not sure if I would do things any differently if I could back in time armed with the knowledge of THM. I do know that I wish I had done things differently.

You see, tragedies pass and life really does go on. Sometimes it’s unbearable but we do eventually get through it. Every positive thing we do in the midst of that tragedy helps to shorten our recovery time, not only emotionally, but also physically. If you’re going through a difficult time, take heart, it WILL pass! If you go through it staying completely on plan then that is an incredible victory. If you go through it eating donuts and waffles then don’t beat yourself up too badly – that will pass too! There are times in our lives where we need to give ourselves a little extra grace and when tragedy strikes that is definitely one of those times. Do the best you can to take care of yourself during those tough times but forgive the emotional choices you may make – tomorrow is a new day.
