I’ve been living a mostly Trim Healthy Mama life style for 3 & ½ years now. I love this way of eating and you will likely not find me having “moved on” later in life because it is pretty simple and tasty and sugar is really really terrible for us. That being said, I’ve often heard that familiarity breeds contempt (Dani Johnson) and that is so very true. When we’re familiar with something we tend to think we know it all so we can be a little (or a lot) closed minded about the thing we already know so much about.
When we first read the book we were so confused, it seemed like it was in another language! So we (hopefully) asked a LOT of questions to people who had been around for a while until we felt more confident in our understanding of how THM works. Once we “figured it out” though, a lot of us set the book down and let it collect dust. I’d be willing to bet that most of us do not have a photographic memory though… so it’s not possible for us to have learned absolutely everything in that book.
One thing that I would caution you to do on this journey is…
To stay teachable! Keep asking questions, re-read chapters just to make sure you really understood it, and look at it from a perspective of being able to teach it to others who have never heard of THM. Get to know the information so well that you could break it down very simply to anyone. Read the book more than once! This is a lifetime journey so take your time.
If you’re as committed to THM as I am, then just like the bible is my guide to life, THM is my guide to eating healthy and taking good care of the body that the Lord has blessed me with. I’m going to go off plan. I’m going to accidentally (or not so accidentally) eat crossovers. That’s life! I’m going to sin too because I’m not perfect but does that mean I’m going to chuck my bible out the window? Of course not. I seek forgiveness and move on. With THM when I mess up I forgive myself, give myself grace, and move on.
The important thing is to stay teachable and keep asking questions. The authors are always uncovering more health benefits and different foods to combine for tasty treats. I’m still likely never going to buy okra, but if someone makes me an okra brownie, I’ll try it. 😉
