Starting Your Day Right
by April Osteen Simons
When my kids were younger, I was going about my “morning ritual” of picking up the house before I left for the day. I have to tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. My kid’s rooms were amazingly clean. I mean like, “think you’re dreaming” kind of clean. Sure, we had our morning checklist before we left for school, but let’s be honest, they didn’t always hit the mark. However, that particular morning seemed absolutely perfect. Maybe it was because a few nights prior I had a “Come to Jesus” meeting with my kids about helping around the house because I was tired of doing everything. (Can you relate…Ha!) Regardless, their rooms were fabulous and I was elated.
I was so happy I decided to…
…give out a grand prize for overall fabulousness. It’s amazing what a clean house can do for you! The winner was my oldest daughter. When the kids came home, I bragged on all of them. It wasn’t long before my two youngest daughters saw the prize on their oldest sister’s bed. They came downstairs excitedly and asked me if I would be handing out prizes the next day. I assured them I would. At that moment I could see the wheels turning in their heads.
About three o’clock the next morning, I woke up to strange noises. I got out of bed and went to the other room. As I walked further I heard my two little girls talking. When I walked into our computer room, there were my two daughters–fully dressed for school, hair fixed, and backpacks by the door. I asked them if they knew it was three o’clock in the morning and my daughter quickly responded, “No, mom, its 3:15!” My other daughter piped in, “Mom, we’ve made our beds, picked up our rooms, cleaned our bathrooms and brushed our teeth!” They were so proud. One of them asked me, “Mom, do you think we’ll win the prize today?” I assured them they would while I took them back to their rooms to go to sleep.
Well, needless to say, they won the prize that day. Sure their rooms were spotless, but in my eyes, they won for sheer determination and drive. I mean, I loved the fact they woke up with a plan. I admired how they worked their plan in order to reach their goal. And I was thrilled they set the course for their day before they even got out of bed.
I learned a great lesson from my girls that day. It made me see the importance of starting the day out on the right foot. Not just waking up and going about the day, but waking up with a plan and purpose. They had their eye on the prize and they were determined to win it!
Do you know that not only does God have a plan for our lives, but He has a plan for each day of our lives? He wants each day to be successful and productive. He wants us to be purposeful about what we want to accomplish daily. I like to look at it like this; God has given me this day to use as I will. What I do with it is important because I’m exchanging a day of my life for it.
The Bible says in Ephesians 5:15, Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people). In other words, make each day count. Don’t just go through the motions. Don’t just live life because it’s there. Live with enthusiasm! Live with hope and expectation. The truth of the matter is this; if you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.
You have to see every day as a new beginning. God reminds us in Isaiah 43:19 that He is doing a new thing. Yesterday might have been a little shaky, but today—it’s a brand new day. Not only that, the scripture assures us that God’s mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness. I love that!
Do you know it’s just like the enemy to break us down before we get started? He wants to convince us before we even get out of bed that we’re going to have a bad day. His plan is to magnify the negative so we feel overwhelmed, unprepared and overworked. Remember, he’s after our strength and if he can steal our strength, he gets our joy.
So how do we prevent that from happening? We have to be more determined than the devil! Either we believe his lies, or we stand on the side of the Word of God that clearly states in John 10:10 that God desires for us to have a life of abundance and a life fulfilled. Listen, before you get out of bed every morning, you have to decide what kind of day you’re going to have. Either you’re going to act as you feel; which might be tired, a little cranky and stressed out. Or you’re going to make the decision to have an enjoyable, productive day. Attitude is everything.
The best attitude booster is the Word of God. So why not speak it out before you even get out of bed? I know I do. Believe me; I need all the help I can get! When you recognize your world is framed by the words that you speak, you realize the importance of speaking the right things.
Let me show you what I mean. Here’s a guide to help you start your day off on the right foot. It’s a declaration that will set a positive precedence for your day. Start your day by saying things like this:
