This past week, my daughter, Kenna came in to the office where I was working and said, “Let’s play ‘rock, paper, scissors.'” I immediately put my left fist in my right hand to begin playing with her. Then she stopped me.
“You be paper, okay?” she asked.
“Sounds good to me” I told her, laughing to myself.
We played a round of “rock, paper, scissors” and, sure enough…
the second I landed my flat hand down like a piece of paper, Kenna landed her scissor hand down. As you probably know, “scissors” cuts “paper” and wins the round. Of course, I had to act surprised and congratulate her on her cunning win.
Man, oh, man! If only we could run life the way that Kenna runs her game of “rock, paper, scissors.” We would always know what is right around the corner and could always be prepared for it.
But, would that really be a good thing? Really?
When you stop to think about it, it’s the challenge of not knowing that is truly exciting. Life is kind of like those weeks leading up to Christmas. But it all depends on how you look at it. You can bemoan the bills that wait for you in the mail or you can get excited about the presents that are wrapped and waiting under the tree.
LIfe is full of anticipation. It all comes down to what you are anticipating.
Scripture tells us that God knows the plans that He has for us. They are plans to prosper us and not to harm us, to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). We may not know what’s around that next bend, but God surely does. He is a good God and He loves you dearly. You don’t have to be afraid of whether you are going to get “rock, paper, or scissors.” No way! You can step confidently into your future because you are not going into it alone. God goes before you and behind you. He covers you and you are precious to Him. Put Him first, and you can experience the joy of living out His plans to prosper you.
Do you realize what freedom this is? You don’t need to worry about if you are going to get dealt the right hand. You don’t need to pull any strings. You don’t need to force any issues. You can just let go and believe. God is working in your favor and He wants to prosper you. He can do more in five seconds with your faith, then He can in five years with your effort. So…what are you believing for?
