Holly on Hollywood – Overcomer

Holly on Hollywood
“Overcomer”
by Holly McClure

Overcomer is an uplifting story about a high school basketball coach, John Harrison (Alex Kendrick), who loses half the members of his championship team, when the town’s manufacturing plant closes. He is reassigned duty as the cross-country track coach by the school principal, Mrs. Brooks (Priscilla C. Shirer), and is surprised when the only one who shows up for the team is a girl with asthma. Hannah (Aryn Wright-Thompson) has a talent for running but a troubled past with hidden issues that are eventually exposed before her most challenging race.

The PG family-friendly movie (10 and up), is an Alex and Stephen Kendrick brothers production; produced, written, directed and starred in, by both brothers. There are multiple scenes dealing with life situations including; a serious illness, asthma, marital disagreements, job loss, stealing, a rebellious lifestyle, a father’s repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation between a father and daughter, and discovering your identity in Christ. The story has realistic dialogue, funny scenes, emotional moments, sports action, exciting races and a powerful ending. There’s a touching scene when Hannah tells coach that she finally realizes who she is (“created by God”) and that’s one of the reasons why critics don’t like this movie…they don’t understand the message of redemption, they think it makes the movie “preachy”.  What they don’t understand is that audiences relate to the humanity in these characters. They want to see people they can cheer for, who have faults, find redemption, are forgiven, forgive others, and ultimately, are given grace and the chance for a new beginning. Be sure to take a tissue – you’ll need one! I was emotionally, spiritually and profoundly moved, by Overcomer!  I applaud the Kendrick brothers for another wonderful addition to the legacy of films that have changed the eternal lives of so many!
