Our Life Follows Our Mouth
by Diana Scothorn
A powerful truth I’ve learned is that my life will always follow the direction of my mouth. The words I speak today reflect the life I am living tomorrow.
James 3:10 states, “Out of the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. These things, my brothers, should not be this way, for we have a moral obligation to speak in a manner that reflects our fear of God”.
Deuteronomy 30:15-16 says, “See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, and to keep his commands; then you will live and increase.”
God makes it clear our mouth is the path to a life of prosperity or poverty! It’s our choice! The Words from our mouths will be the direction our life follows.
Our mouth has the power to…
…discourage, cause anxiety, and destroy. God intended our mouths to encourage, speak comfort, and produce a life filled with the joy of His lasting abundance.
I remember being divorced for ten years; miserable! The more I fed my spirit by complaining about my circumstances and agreeing with my feelings, the worse I felt and the worse my circumstances became. When I finally put my foot down and began to speak God’s promises over my life, I began to see change.
I would say out of my mouth out loud, Thank You, Lord, that I am continually satisfied with good things. Your love and mercy are forever, and Your goodness and favor will chase me down.
You will never leave me alone, and You will never forsake me in my weakness. Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Thank you for filling me to the brim with the lasting fruit of Your Spirit.
You also said that he who finds a wife is a good thing. I desire to be married, and I know being married is a good thing, so I thank You for bringing my husband to me.
Your Word said that You would give me the desires of my heart, and I know You are faithful to perform and deliver Your Word, so I thank you in advance.
It is incredible how when we agree with what we see going on around “our world,” we become anxious, stressed, and tense. When we agree with God’s Word and begin to speak it with our mouths, everything looks different, and our life starts to line up with the Truth we speak.
When we speak words contrary to God’s Word, we feed our flesh. Our flesh is our will and emotions. We are reacting and doing what we want, when we want, to make us feel good now.
Satan wants us to feed our flesh continually, so it can grow stronger and have power over our life. When we “feed” our spirit God’s truth, it causes our spirit to grow stronger and have the strength to overcome any obstacle.
I have found when all “hell” is breaking loose in my life, that generally, my life is going in the direction of my mouth. The devil takes pleasure in destroying our life without his assistance, with the words produced from our mouths.
Whenever we speak negatively, it gives the devil strength and power over our life. When we feed our spirit the word of God, it provides our spirit strength and power to endure.
I have learned to be aware of the words out of my mouth at all times! It can become a habit to speak what we see, but it is a habit that can be broken with the Grace of God.
When we get in the habit of agreeing with God’s Word today, we will see our life flourish, and as we look back, we will see our life following the direction of our mouth.
We must agree with God, not what we see. We can speak satans lies or talk about the truth of God. It depends on the destination we desire to go.
