One Size Does Not Fit All

One Size Does Not Fit All

By Meggan Larson

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? It’s a four-letter word for a lot of people (or at least it usually emits one from their lips), but it’s important. Some people will tell you that it’s the only way to lose weight. I personally disagree but I do think it’s needed in some form or other. Okay, what in the world am I talking about?

I’m talking about…

…exercise!

Look y’all, I’m not a huge fan. Forcing myself to move, working up a sweat, getting all disgusting and needing to shower immediately are not in my top ten list of things I want to do in a day. For years I thought the only way to effectively lose weight was to commit to an intense workout program that made me sweat buckets over an hour to an hour and a half… period… several times per week. Do you know what results I got? I GAINED weight! I was so dedicated that I even brought my workout DVDs to another country so that I wouldn’t miss a day even on vacation and I gained 5lbs over that 90 day period. Are you kidding me?

I have a friend who has seen amazing results with the same program. She lost 161lbs in a year and has successfully kept it off by working out hard 6 days a week. She’s focused, she’s dedicated, and I am not her. It’s not going to happen and frankly, my body considers that kind of intense workout to be stressful which is evident in the weight gain instead of weight loss.

All that being said, I do still think that exercise is important. It’s not as simple as one size fits all or you needing to workout 6 days every single week until you die. I have another friend who walks regularly and jumps on her mini-trampoline and looks AMAZING! Jumping on a trampoline is fun! To me anyway. Maybe it’s not for you and if that’s the case then what IS fun for you? Maybe it’s joining an organized sport like volleyball and playing on a team. Maybe it’s getting a rowing machine or going to the gym regularly. You don’t have to conform to what some “coach” is telling you will be the only way you’ll ever lose the weight.

Exercise is important but it doesn’t have to look like following a boring workout DVD that you hate every minute of. Are you going to stick with that long term? No. No, you’re not. Find something you WILL stick with, something that you WILL enjoy, and do that!
