Last week, I talked about the “imposters” that try to make their way into our lives. They disguise themselves and before we know it, we’ve allowed them in.
Here are a few ways to prevent such unwelcome guests:
1. Guard your gates.
Be continually on guard and aware that there is an enemy on the prowl, and he seeks to devour and destroy.
I know for me, in the moments of everyday life, I can get pretty casual and forget what may be coming at me. Letting negative thoughts or attitudes take over in a moment, is one thing. But those seemingly harmless thoughts can become an attitude, which can then become a mindset. Suddenly a big wake-up call is needed to prevent long lasting problems in our health, or relationships. Be aware- and nip those thoughts in the bud.
2. Move in the opposite direction!
Sometimes, it takes intentional, opposite thinking and action to remove these “negative-nellies” from our lives. If procrastination is becoming a habit- attack it with immediacy. Struggling with anxiety? Be intentional to use relaxation techniques and counter the negative thoughts with Truth about the situation. Finding yourself repeatedly frustrated with the circumstances of your life? Attack those feelings with reminders of the opposite: joy & contentment! Start a thankfulness journal, put a smile on your face even when you don’t want to and sing out loud a happy song. Watch the ugliness flee!
3. Protect yourself from further attack.
We have been given a way to stand guard and cover ourselves. Enter the spiritual “Armour” of God:
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:11-18
As we stand in the Truth of God’s word, we are given the strength to withstand the schemes of the imposters around us.
Enjoy living in the fullness of the Truth, in the loving care of the One of who created us to be free!
