Mind Matters

Mind Matters

by Meggan Larson

I know that my tips have been a little on the heavier side lately (no pun intended!) and this one will be too but I promise I’ll lighten things up next week. The reason I’ve been focusing so much on the mental aspect of weight loss is because that is the biggest part of the battle in my opinion. You can have all the tips and tricks in the world but if your heart and mind are in the wrong place then it won’t matter.

You need to…

…search yourself and find out who this is all for. Why are you trying to lose weight? Who are you trying to get healthier for? The answer matters. The answer will determine whether or not you’re going to stick to what you’re doing. The answer will determine whether you’ll feel victorious when you reach your goal, or whether you’ll feel empty because it was for the wrong reasons. How did you decide on your goal weight? Was it really your idea or was it planted in your mind by someone else who told you how much you should weigh? Is it realistic? Are you 5”11 and wanting to weigh 100lbs because your BMI indicator told you it was what you should weigh? It’s not only important to have realistic goals, it’s equally important to have a realistic timeline. Let’s be honest, it didn’t take us a month to gain all this weight, and it’s not going to take a single month to lose it.

At times we need an honesty check and we need to determine what our motivations are for weight loss (or anything for that matter). If you’re trying to lose weight for anyone but yourself then you may not be successful. It has to be for you. Your actions can’t be dependent on anyone else’s reaction because let’s face it; people will often disappoint us. It can be disheartening when no one notices our weight loss and if we were depending on that to keep us motivated then we might give up! Instead of relying on approval from others, let it simply be an added bonus to the healthy path you’re on for YOU. Because that’s who this is all for.
