Measuring Your Self Image

Measuring Your Self Image

By Shauna Wallace

Self-image might very well be one of the most difficult challenges we girls and women face. We compare our insides to other peoples’ outsides, and if you’re like me, we come up short every time. We measure against our perception of others, when the real measure we should use is…

God’s word.

I had the pleasure of speaking at a church youth even for girls and women about self-image. Each gal received a gift: “IT IS WRITTEN.”

Using Jesus as our example, we looked at how He uses God’s word to combat Satan’s lies in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-10). Satan wants to tempt Jesus to destruction (just as he does us!), but Jesus simply replies with, “It is written…” before quoting scripture. Eventually, He just tells Satan, “Away with you!”

We can too!

I hope this simple exercise I did with the girls and ladies that evening will help you in redefining yourself according to what scripture says about you! You can do it alone, with your daughters, your Bible study, your youth group or women’s ministry. I’ll even come share my testimony and lead you through it if you’d like! (Go to http://shaunawallace.com/my-speaking to fill out a speaker request form.)

You’ll need a mirror (I used handheld mirrors from the dollar store), a permanent marker (thin tipped is best so you can fit more of God’s truth on the mirror!), and a dry erase marker.

First, take your permanent marker and write “IT IS WRITTEN” at the center top of the mirror. You could even use a bathroom mirror to do this, BUT use your dry erase marker for everything, and if it’s not your home, be sure to ask permission!

Using the chart below as a starting point, take the permanent marker permanent marker and write the key words for the scriptural truths about how God sees us and who we are in Christ around the outer edge of the mirror, leaving the center clear.

You can fit them all, or just those you feel the Holy Spirit is speaking directly to you. Next, take a dry erase marker and write a truth you specifically need right now. Then, as the Holy Spirit ministers to you specifically over time, you can change the dry erase message to be what He is speaking to you at any given moment.

Now, when you look in the mirror, you no longer see just your reflection. You see God’s truth!

Here are a number of scriptures and the key words that capture their truth for you.
