Look Up and Believe

Look Up and Believe

by Hannah Keeley

So, there I was on a flight home from Dallas, crammed into a tiny seat on the airplane with a very large man sitting next to me. It was a pretty full flight, and honestly, not the most desirable situation. I reached up to twist the air control so I could get a little bit of circulation in the cramped quarters. I  wasn’t looking forward to a two and a half hour flight with my knees in my chest.

That’s when the flight attendant shut the door and I noticed that …

The entire 3-seat row in the emergency exit row was completely empty. I looked around and noticed that other people saw it, too; an entire row, empty. The flight attendant walked down the aisle making a final check, heading to where I was sitting near the back. When she came next to my seat I got her attention, pointed to the empty row, and said: “Excuse me, could I sit in that row?”

She nodded and said, “Sure!” Just like that!

I gathered my stuff, got my bag from the overhead compartment, and made my way to freedom. I could feel all the eyes on me as I walked up to the empty row and stretched myself out. I knew what they were thinking: “why didn’t I snag it?” And I knew what I was thinking:

‘I sure am glad I did!’

We all know what the Bible says about asking:

The very end of James 4:2, tells us, “You do not have, because you do not ask.” A lot of people will read that and think to themselves, “Okay, then let me ask for more!” And, sure, there is some truth to that. But let’s think a little deeper for a second. The truth is, we only ask for what we feel deep down inside we deserve. We may ask for something, but if we feel that we don’t deserve it, our hearts will not be in agreement with our mouths and we, therefore, will not receive it!

God has the heart to bless His children. But even stronger than that is His desire for His children to know His character. It’s kind of like me and my kids. I LOVE to bless my kids. It gives me joy to give them gifts and pour good things into their lives. My true desire though, is that my kids KNOW this about me. It would break my heart if my children ever doubted my desire to bless them.

Can you see the difference?

It’s not enough to ask for God’s blessings. It’s so much more important that you understand His desire to bless you! When you know that God wants to bless you, you can boldly come to your Daddy’s throne in confidence, expecting to be blessed. God knows your heart, and He wants you to know His.

The very beginning of James 4:2 gives us a not-so-pretty picture of what happens when we don’t know His character. It says, “You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled.”

I’m sure people were jealous of that empty row I had all to myself. But the truth is that any one of them could have spoken up and gotten it. But it takes boldness. The truth is, if you are a born-again child of God, you deserve to be blessed. You’re a child of the King! Believe this about your blessing, and then get the boldness to step up and claim what is rightfully yours!

The alternative is living in those cramped, stuffy places of jealousy and unfulfillment. You don’t want that! Step out of those tight quarters and step into God’s abundance. Aggressively refuse to take on jealousy and seek God. When we seek Him first and really begin to know His character, all that other stuff is just like cherries on top of your ice cream.

C’mon, there’s plenty of room for everyone!

Do you know someone who is longing for more leg room? Why not share this on Facebook and keep the love going? Also, please share your comments and share the areas where you feel restricted in your life so I can come alongside you and believe for more stretching room!
