Is Your “Royal Mail” System Operating?
by Hannah Keeley
When I was in Scotland recently, I fell head over heels in love—with everything Scotland! From the green hills dotted with sheep to the baked beans for breakfast, I fell in love with every tiny detail, even the mailboxes! They were painted a brilliant red and molded into them an image of a crown and the words, “ROYAL MAIL.”
Did you know that we have a “royal mail” system already set up? It’s called…
…prayer. We can communicate with our King just as close as if we were talking to our own spirit. We can inquire of Him, commune with Him, laugh with Him—it’s true! God has a sense of humor. But many times, we feel like our “royal mail” isn’t getting picked up. It’s not being delivered. We’re not getting any messages back. I totally understand, so I want to show you how this mail system really works.
First, we must have the proper postage. If you stuck a letter in your mailbox without a stamp, you can be sure that it’s not getting very far. John 14:13-14 Jesus says, “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” Our “postage” is our Lord Jesus! When can communicate directly with God only because Jesus broke down all the barriers and made the way for us. When you know this, you can understand who you are in Christ. When you understand that Jesus took away all your sin and made you righteous, you can boldly step into God’s throne room and talk with God. That’s why we say, “In Jesus’ name” when we pray. It’s only because of Jesus that we have this authority. God doesn’t want us to come slinking in to His throne room and grovel at His feet. No ma’am! Step into your authority. Know who you are in Christ. And pray with boldness and confidence in His Word.
Second, you’ve got to make sure it’s getting delivered. Mark 11:25 tells us that “when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Sin can quickly stop up your royal mail delivery service. If it seems like your prayers aren’t getting delivered, then maybe it’s time to step aside and see if anything is blocking the pathway. Sin is anything that is in disobedience to God. Holding grudges, harboring bitterness, nursing anger—all of these things go in direct opposition to God. He is love; and when we operate in any way that opposes that love, we set up barriers—not only to answered prayer, but to our own success. God wants to bless you. But He can’t bless bitterness and anger. If you have anything against anyone, then it’s time to forgive and let go. You may think this is impossible to do, but with God all things are possible.
Third, you need to open up your mail. We get a lot of junk mail. I just tear up most of it and toss it in the trash. But every now and then something important will show up—a card from a friend or some important correspondence from a business. I’m always sure to open that mail. If I didn’t, I would never know what lay inside. Prayer is like that. Quite often, we just blurt out words and go along our merry way, internally checking off that “prayer” item on our to-do list. But prayer is a two-way street. Make sure you’re listening. Spend time in quiet before God, allowing Him to speak to your heart. And make sure you are opening up His Word so you can hear from Him directly. If you follow these steps, I’m pretty sure your “royal mail” service is going to be fully functional!
Now it’s your turn! What are some insights you have about prayer? Please share them below. Also, I would love to know what prayers are on your heart so I can come alongside you and stand in agreement. Leave a comment!
Hannah Keeley was once in overwhelmed mom living in a cluttered house, deep in debt, out of shape, and barely hanging on. But one day, after finding herself sobbing uncontrollably into a pile of clean laundry, she realized God has bigger and better plans for her (just like He does for each one of His children). Beginning that day, she began making changes in her life that took her from overwhelmed to overjoyed. Today, she’s helping moms do the same. Hannah, her husband, Blair, and their seven children live in Richmond, Virginia, and are having the time of their lives!
