I Did a Scary Thing
By Meggan Larson
Last week I did a scary thing. One of my best friends asked me if I would do it with her and honestly, I wasn’t sure I could. It had been years and years since I did this thing last and even then I sucked at it. I want this year to be the year of change for me and that means breaking through barriers and doing things I didn’t think I could do. So I did it. I did the scary thing and you know what?
It turned out okay!
I went for…
…a run y’all. A RUN! The last time I ran voluntarily (running from wasps doesn’t count) was back in like 2008. I am not kidding guys. I have always admired people who go for jogs but the admiration is as far as I used to get. When my friend asked me to get the couch to 25K app and start it with her I believe my response was “ummm 25K??” I almost admitted defeat before I even started.
I don’t want to be that person anymore though. So we started last week and it was amazing. First of all, the app is free which is fabulous. Second of all, it starts off slow. I started off with a 5-minute walk which was doable. Then I jogged (this is a loose term friend…) for 60 seconds and walked for 90 seconds. I did that for about 20 minutes and then had another 5-minute cooldown only I had badly miscalculated my distance and was much further away from home than I thought so I had an additional 10-minute walk home. Oh well! I got a stitch in my side as I ran but I kept at it. I ran by three fields with cows in them and they were all very entertained by my running. Afterward, I was so proud of myself. That feeling alone was worth it. Knowing that I did something I was afraid to do and it didn’t kill me.
What have you been afraid to do? I’m cheering you on friend!
