I Can’t. But You Can!

I Can’t. But You Can!
by Hannah Keeley

I came home from some shopping the other day and found that my daughter, the accomplished pastry chef, had prepared a couple dozen cinnamon apple cupcakes. When Katie makes cupcakes, she doesn’t just make cupcakes. She goes all out. They were all made from scratch and even had a bit of apple pie filling nestled inside. She prepared a delicious buttercream frosting to put on top. But, here’s the thing with Katie. She doesn’t make pastries to eat. She makes them just for the sheer joy of baking. She may take a nibble here and there, but that’s about it. Me, on the other hand? I cook to eat! That’s why when I came home, there were a dozen beautiful cupcakes and then another dozen left unfrosted. She had made the perfect samples and then just stopped. She was done.

So I took matters into my own hands. I decided I would finish frosting the remaining dozen and surprise her with my amazing abilities. The results?…

Not quite as amazing as I had hoped for. Yeah, I guess we all know who the pro is.

Okay, I admit it. I’m not a pastry chef!! I never claimed to be. But Katie is. She knows exactly what she’s doing. She knows how to handle a pastry bag and knows the exact tip she wants to use. It’s not work for her. It’s total pleasure, and that’s why she’s so good at it.

It reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Ratatouille. My favorite part is when Linguini finally realizes that he can’t cook. And is he is never going to succeed as a chef, he would have to let the rat, Remy, do his cooking. He looks at Remy and says, “I can’t cook. But you can.”
The truth is if we all knew how to live successfully, we would be doing it. But so many of us run around living less than perfect lives, wondering why we keep running into one problem after another. Sometimes it seems like nothing we do turns out right.
But we’re human. We can’t. But God can. He knows what we need. He knows the doors to open and the paths to take. He knows the right moves we need to make to live the lives we want to live. If we just surrender to Him, we can let Him work through us. Want the formula for success? It’s surrender! Quit thinking you know all the answers and seek the one Who has infinite knowledge.
If you’re tired of your recipes for success turning into failures, it’s time to surrender to the one who knows how to cook. Let Him work through you. Jeremiah 29:13 tells us, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with your whole heart.”

Lay it all down. Surrender your clever solutions, your good intentions, and your feeble attempts, and let Him use you, every bit of you. Your ego will keep you frustrated, broke, unhappy, and in bondage. Let go and let God. He knows how to create a successful life, so seek Him and let Him do what He does best.
