How to Stay Focused

Recently I’ve been reading the book The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey and in it he talks about intense focus and how we should only focus on one thing at a time. At first I thought it was a bit of a strange concept but the more he explained it, the more it made sense. He compared it to using a magnifying glass to burn some paper with the sun. If you simply put a piece of paper outside it’s not likely going to combust into flames. BUT if you use a magnifying glass to focus the power of the sun right onto that piece of paper (or ant, come on, we all did it) then get ready to watch it light up!
So how does this apply to weight loss with THM?
I’m on the Facebook Trim Healthy Mama groups quite a bit and I see a huge lack of focus in the mamas who are trying to be on plan. A lot of people feel so overwhelmed and I think part of the problem is that there is a lack of focus. Some people don’t want to read the book all the way through, others think they need every special ingredient mentioned in order to be successful, still, others are so terrified of accidentally creating crossovers that they just go off plan altogether and order a pizza instead.
The point that Dave Ramsey is making in his book is that a lack of focus is not going to accomplish anything and you’ll soon give up. Of course he’s talking about finances but it can be compared to weight loss as well. If you’re trying to pay off debt, save, invest, pay bills, etc. all at the same time then it’s not going to be nearly as effective as simply paying off your debt with laser focus and then moving on to the next step. With THM the first step is to really understand the plan. Read through it, write down any confusions you may have, then read through it again. Ask questions in the groups to get clarification – send me an email with any questions, and understand that once you fully understand the plan and how it works, you’ll be able to apply it to your life and lose the weight, or gain the health, or both.
Don’t worry about the special ingredients, how fast or slow you might lose weight, or if there really is okra in every recipe (there isn’t). Use the awesome power of focus to completely understand what it is you’re doing so that you can do it effectively. I didn’t do this when I started the plan and I ended up gaining 10lbs simply from lack of understanding.
Don’t do what I did!
Take a minute, breathe, read through the plan, and focus.
