The Secret Life of Pets

Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) is a happy dog who adores his owner Katie and spends his days chatting with Gidget (a Pomeranian who has a doggie crush on him) and other pet “friends” in his apartment building until Katie comes home. Life is perfect until Katie brings home Duke, a shaggy new “brother” from the shelter that upsets their happy home. When the two are separated from their dog walker, they’re nabbed by Animal Control but escape with the help of a maniacal bunny (Kevin Hart) and his underground army of unwanted pets. Meanwhile, Gidget enlists the help of her apartment friends to find Max.

The PG animated comedy contains lots of jokes about pets using the bathroom, insult humor and numerous chase scenes involving dog catchers, creepy looking animals and perilous situations. This family-friendly, funny, engaging story has clever dialogue, a colorful menagerie of animals, a fantasy scene with Max and Duke in a frankfurter factory, a clever spin on the daily life of pets and familiar plotlines that kind of reminded me of “Toy Story”. I took my grandchildren who had all seen the trailer and couldn’t wait for the scene with the white dog rocking out to heavy metal music – and they still laughed when they saw it. There’s a positive message about friendship, teamwork and the need to be loved that will entertain all ages and remind us all of how special pets our pets really are!
