“The Lego Ninjago Movie”
by Holly McClure

The Lego Ninjago Movie takes place in the Lego town of Ninjago. A force of good ninjas lead by Lloyd (Dave Franco) stands against the villain Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux), who happens to be Lloyd’s absentee father. When Lord Garmadon takes over Ninjago, Lloyd, his fellow ninjas and their wise master (Jackie Chan) go on a quest to find a secret capable of defeating him. After several battles, Lloyd tells Garmadon he wishes he wasn’t his father. Eventually Garmadon reveals to Lloyd that…

….he wishes he had stayed with him and his mom, after deciding to conquer Ninjago, but he couldn’t change. Lloyd and his dad eventually reconcile and Garmadon moves back home with Lloyd and his mom.
The PG is for mild action and rude humor. There’s an abundance of silliness, funny lines, strong voice performances, creative lego characters, lots of kung fu-like action, pop culture riffs and a “monster” cat. The good guys show courage, the bad guys turn good and there are messages of forgiveness, acceptance and bravery. A word of warning for adults of young children whose parents are divorced, going through a divorce or the father is not in the picture. Lloyd longs for his absentee father’s love and approval but Garmadon is selfish and makes fun of Lloyd missing him until the very end when the two reconcile. The subject of anabsentee dad and parents breaking up using glib dialogue is not exactly kid-friendly material. But the wacky action and funny Lego characters will entertain kids, the dialogue will amuse adults and the abundance of product placement will surely sell more Legos.
