Holly on Hollywood
“The Great Wall”
by Holly McClure
“The Great Wall” stars Matt Damon and Pero Tovar, as two rogue mercenaries on a quest for “black powder”(gunpowder), who discover the Great Wall of China and a giant army called The Nameless Order. After a test of combat skills, William and Tovar are asked to join the fight alongside a female warrior Commander Lin (Jing Tian) and her legions of soldiers distinguished by skill and colors, as they fight hordes of mythical, flesh-eating TaoTie creatures, that surface every 60 years to swarm the great wall and purge the land to feed their queen.
The PG-13 action, adventure, sci-fi fantasy, is directed by Chinese director Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Hero) who has created a majestic epic with stunning acrobatic camera work, fight scenes in eye-popping 3D, an artful use of color, giant CGI lizard like monsters, long panoramic sweeps of gorgeous terrain, ornate costumes and beautiful images, like the shot of hundreds of traditional sky lanterns released at a funeral. I thoroughly enjoyed this visual extravaganza with unique fight scenes that I’ve never seen before, bungee jumping female warriors, flaming balls of death, giant “scissor” walls and much more, that make it best for mature pre-teens to adults.
I also enjoyed seeing Damon in a warrior role he was “Bourne” to play, with super hero fighting and archery skills, witty quips and a redemptive lesson for all about the power of trust.
