SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME is a true story about a wealthy Texas art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear) who confesses to having an affair to his wife, Deborah (Renee Zellweger), who in turn, forgives him. As the two work on their marriage, Deborah asks Ron to help her spend time serving others at a neglected mission catering to the homeless. At first he detests the work but it’s there that he meets an angry African-American man, known as Denver “Suicide” (Djimon Hounsou), who the couple befriends. Eventually that friendship saves Denver and their marriage. Jon Voight also stars.

Same Kind of Different As Me

The PG13 faith-based drama is for pre-teens to adults because of mature themes about homelessness, racial discrimination, an alcoholic father who lashes out at family members with insults and racial slurs (including the “N” word), flashbacks that show a young Denver being threatened and introduced to the KKK in a small Southern town, and there’s a death due to cancer and a family coping with grief. The true story reveals the cruel past that haunted Denver and shows how love, patience and trust, build a foundation of friendship that not only changed Denver, but the family as well. Those who are dealing with cancer, or have family members going through it, may be sensitive to scenes showing a woman’s struggle and death. Hounsou delivers a powerful and intense performance that is Oscar worthy. The true story has a similar “Blind-side” feel to it with a wealthy couple taking a person who society has given up on and turning their life around for the good. Themes of racial acceptance, overcoming the past, forgiveness, redemption, God’s grace and unselfishness, make this an inspiring, well-made, above-average, faith-based movie. Be sure and stay for the credits to see the real people. The overall positive message of the movie, demonstrates that everyone, no matter the culture or history, has differences – the SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME.
