Holly on Hollywood – Missing Link

Holly on Hollywood
“Missing Link”
by Holly McClure

MISSING LINK follows Sir Lionel Frost, a selfish explorer who’s determined to be admitted into London’s prestigious member’s-only club for adventurers. Lionel makes a wager with the club’s president: If Lionel can prove that Bigfoot is real, he must be allowed into the club. The arrogant president hires a hitman to kill Lionel before he can return to England. But Lionel finds the Sasquatch in America, who can speak English and prefers to be called Susan. Susan convinces Lionel that he is lonely and wants to find his “cousins,” the Yetis. Lionel asks his ex-girlfriend, Adelina Fortnight, to come along and soon the three are off to the snowy Himalayas to find the Yetis. Voiced by Hugh Jackman, Timothy Olyphant, Zach Galifianakis and Zoe Saldana.
The PG stop-action/computer-generated animated adventure from LAIKA studios (The Boxtrolls), is a cross between a road trip comedy and a buddy adventure. The language and humor have a British slant that younger kids may not fully understand but older kids to adults will enjoy. The lead actors dazzle with their star personalities and there are some great action sequences, especially on a ship. The animation is stunning with details like clothing textures, the fur on the Yetis, the grand landscapes of snow-capped mountains and Victorian-era London’s busy streets. There are some scenes in which guns are used, as well as a few “bad guy” deaths and one climactic scene when a villain threatens a grandmother and her infant grandchild at gunpoint. A gun battle ensues and people fall to their death off a bridge but all ends well for the main characters. There are positive messages about friendship, empathy, teamwork, generosity and a poignant message about pride coming before the fall. MISSING LINK may be a bit slow for some and not as funny as expected but those who appreciate LAIKA films will enjoy it.
