Holly on Hollywood – Dog Days

Holly on Hollywood
“Dog Days”
by Holly McClure

“DOG DAYS” is an ensemble comedy about a group of people in Los Angeles, whose lives become intertwined thanks to their dogs. Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell are morning TV hosts, Vanessa Hudgens is a barista trying to pick a career path, Finn Wolfhard is a pizza delivery boy whose regular customer is a grumpy old man (Ron Cephas Jones), Rob Corddry and Eva Longoria are first-time adoptive parents and as you can guess, each character is impacted by how a dog influences or affects their lives and helps them relate to others. Adam Pally and a cast of others also star.

Although this PG comedy is family friendly, the content is aimed more for older kids, 20 somethings and adults, because of mature themes, an implied sexual situation, a discussion about reproduction, mild language and (spoiler alert) a dog dies. There are storylines kids will enjoy like a new family formed through adoption and a young teenager who helps an older man look for his lost dog. There’s something for everyone, including an interracial friendship, a pregnant woman and her dog woes, a musician whose responsibility is affecting both his personal and professional life and several other stories with mostly one-dimensional characters (because of the large cast). As each character tries to figure out the next step in their lives, their dogs help them forge important new relationships. The variety of plots and adorable dogs make this summer movie a fun, romantic comedy, that adults, kids and dogs, can enjoy together…I give it two paws up!
