Holly on Hollywood – Cars 3

Holly on Hollywood
“Cars 3”
by Holly McClure

Cars 3 stars the beloved Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) in a race for his legacy when he faces a new generation of faster cars, led by the flashy Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer).  After a terrible crash, Lightning almost retires, until a new sponsor, a trainer and some of his old friends, help him gain the confidence he needs to be a winner on and off the track.

The PG kid-friendly story is full of ….

….colorful Pixar action, witty dialogue and a message adults will appreciate, about coming to terms with being older and not the “best” anymore.  Lightning is at odds with his wealthy sponsor keen on cashing in on his fame but still has heart to encourage others, like his trainer Cruz who never believed in herself as a racer. Pixar is at its best at making animation both realistic (like the scenes on the racetrack) and beautiful (like the scenes on a beach with waves in the background. But my favorite was when Lightning reflects on his old trainer and pal, Doc Hudson (voiced by Paul Newman who died after the first film was made). I enjoyed hearing the voice of Newman giving Doc’s wise advice. It’s very touching for the adult audience and a reminder of why we liked the first Carsso much.

Cars 3 has inspiring lessons about getting older, mentoring, giving up ego to encourage others and it brings a sense of closure to a popular franchise both kids and adults have enjoyed.
