Holly on Hollywood – Breakthrough

Holly on Hollywood
by Holly McClure

BREAKTHROUGH is based on an actual incident that took place in 2015 when 14-year-old John (Marcel Ruiz), fell through thin ice on a frozen Missouri lake. After 15 minutes underwater, John was rescued by firemen but showed no pulse, he was then rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors couldn’t revive John and had a grim report for his mother (Chrissy Metz). Undeterred, Joyce prays over John’s body and he comes to life. John miraculously recovered without any problems. Josh Lucas and Topher Grace also star.
The PG drama not only focuses on the dramatic accident but also takes a look at the lives of the different people involved. John is an adopted teenager trying to deal with his anger over feeling betrayed by his birth parents. Joyce uses her faith and love, to pray for her son’s lifeless body.  Afterward, she forms an alliance with the new pastor from  California who previously irritated her with his “left coast” ideas. Brian can’t deal with the sight of his suffering son, so the Smiths turn to their community and church for support. There’s also the scientific/medical perspective from Dr. Garrett who warns that John will “never be the same”, and Tommy, the atheist firefighter who is convinced God instructed him how to pull the boy from the water. It even asks the hard questions – why would God save one but not another? Metz delivers a powerful and emotional performance that is sure to bring a tear to your eyes. BREAKTHROUGH is a poignant reminder that faith and love, can create a mountain of hope and sometimes, even a miracle.
