Holly on Hollywood – Aladdin

Holly on Hollywood

ALADDIN is a live-action remake of Disney’s classic 1992 animated musical about the thief Aladdin (Mena Massoud) who meets a beautiful young woman who says she’s a royal handmaiden but is really Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott). As the two become closer, the Sultan’s evil, power-hungry advisor, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) tricks Aladdin into entering the fabled Cave of Wonders, to bring him a special lamp with hidden powers.  Aladdin and his sidekick monkey, Abu, accidentally rub the lamp and release a giant blue genie (Will Smith), who’s bound to grant him three wishes. With Genie’s help, Aladdin transforms into “Prince Ali of Ababwa” to woo Princess Jasmine and change his destiny.

ALADDIN is a PG, kid-friendly movie that all ages will enjoy! There are a few scenes where people are pushed and arrested but no scary or violent scenes. There’s a giant blue genie and an evil one, a flying magic carpet, a darling monkey who helps Aladdin steal things, a scene with lava spewing in the cave, a giant bird that chases Aladdin and the Princess, Aladdin is pushed off a wall into water but he is rescued and a man is pushed into a dark well. There are a couple of new, memorable musical numbers, that will entertain the kids, especially the one with a parade of animals and a giant elephant that Aladdin rides on. I liked the scene where Aladdin admits he was wrong and wants to change his life and become an honest man. Naomi Scott is not only a beautiful Jasmine but she has a powerful voice, especially when she sings the ballad “Speechless” – she’s a rising star!  But it’s Will Smith who steals the show with his hilarious wit, creative genie impersonations, colorful costumes, a voice that proves he can sing and moves that prove he can dance!  ALADDIN is a colorful, fun, adventurous story with fantastic musical numbers, amazing sets and a cast of humans, a genie and a monkey, who take the audience on a magic carpet ride across time. It truly IS a “whole new world”!
